duration of the japanning course is 70 hours across 10 days, with
a maximum of six students.
Previous experience is not necessary.

| COURSE
PROGRAMME |
| Theoretical
aspects include:
History
and diffusion of lacquer and japanning in Europe
Preparation of different glues
Techniques for the treatment of wood and gesso grounds
Types of bole and their use
Importance of shellac and its application
Becoming familiar with the different types of gold and silver commercially
available
Practical exercises include:
Surface
preparation
Treatment of substrates and practice treatment techniques
Gesso preparation
Smoothing with specific abrasives
Different ways of laying the first coats of colour
Reproducing images
Application of mother of pearl and eggshell
Raised work technique and laying of metal leaf
All
projects completed during the course remain the property of the
student.
