The duration of the course is 80 hours across 10 days, with a maximum of six students.

Previous experience is not necessary.

• How to recognise the main characteristics of timbers used in the construction of wooden objects.
• Materials used in polychrome decoration and gilding of wooden surfaces.
• Types of ground surfaces found in gilded and polychrome decoration, with the use of techniques dating from Egyptian times to late seventeenth century Europe (glue, canvas, hemp, coal).
• Glues commonly used in polychrome decoration and gilding (rabbit skin glue, animal glue, fish glue, calcium caseinate, egg and milk)
• Application of Bologna, Meudon, Champagne and Kaolin gesso
• Use of mineral and vegetable earth pigments and binders to imitate brocade, velvet, silk, flesh tones, white and polychrome marble, pastiglia
• Red, black and yellow bole application
• Laying gold leaf and laying silver leaf to imitate gold
• Imitation of precious stones using shellac and vegetable colours
• Cleaning of gilded and polychrome surfaces (smoke, dust, soot, grease and oxidation)
• Removal of overpainted layers .

All projects completed during the course remain the property of the student
