Introduction
to the course taught by Luigi Kunce
- Furniture restoration today is a meeting of science and ingenuity
in the achievement of aesthetic value by returning antique furniture
to its original splendor.
|If the main aims of the course are to develop both manual dexterity
and a passion for the history and art of restoration, then immersing
oneself in the world of restoration means learning its methods,
tools, ethics and techniques.
In this sense the course provides an interdisciplinary approach,
as well a chance to explore in groups or individually the subjects
in which students may have a special interest.
In a world dominated by images, the course provides an opportunity
for rediscovering the pleasure of handling materials, from the
preparation of wood through sanding, stripping, filling, veneering
and colouring up to the final stage of applying a wax polish.
Students will learn that to achieve good restoration they will
not need much more than a capable pair of hands, a bright mind
and lots of passion. Above all they will learn that restoration
is not an exact science, and that objects, despite their similarities
and thanks to their history and nature, are unique artifacts
that are able to provide new challenges every day.
